Classes can fill quickly. In order to enroll, you must submit a completed registration form and full form of payment. It is strongly recommended that you register two weeks prior to a course start date.
Paralegal Studies certificate program is approved for 12.0 CEUs (120 contact hours) through Outreach & Engagement at James Madison University.
JMU Paralegal Certificate Program
Enrollment & Financing
Pre-requisites for the JMU Paralegal Certificate: To ensure our graduates are qualified for employment after earning a paralegal certificate and prepared for the challenging education in this program we require:
- An undergraduate degree OR
- The equivalent of 4 years of professional work experience (Does not need to be in the legal field)
- Access to the internet with high speed connection (courses are administered in an online environment)
- Basic computer and word-processing skills
Payment Options and Financial Assistance
Total cost for the certificate in Paralegal Students is $4995.00 and includes tuition, etextbooks and all course materials.

This is an open enrollment program. In order to enroll, you must submit a completed registration form and payment. It is strongly recommended that you register two weeks prior to a course start date.

*Federal financial aid cannot be used to pay for noncredit courses. At this time, the GI Bill will not pay for distance learning/online noncredit programs.
You may consider a private loan with your banking institution or local credit union. As an alternative, you may apply for a Sallie Mae Smart Option Student Loan or a Wells Fargo Collegiate Loan.
To qualify/apply for a Sallie Mae or Wells Fargo loan:
1. The cost of the course must exceed $1000.00. The requested loan amount cannot exceed the course fee.
2. You must be registered in the course prior to Outreach certifying the loan. Complete and submit the registration form.
3. Apply online with Sallie Mae or Wells Fargo.
They will evaluate your credit score and may recommend a co-borrower for those with low scores or minimal credit history. NOTE: Please use the following James Madison University Continuing Education account when applying: 003721-98.
Outreach & Engagement will be notified of the application and asked to verify and certify course information.
Any questions regarding your loan should occur directly with your loan processor. Refer to their website for contact information. For questions on how to register or to inquire about the loan process, please contact our office.
**Some Paralegal Students programs fill weeks before the start date. If you plan to apply for a Sallie Mae or Wells Fargo loan, begin your application early to allow adequate processing time. Enrollment is not guaranteed until payment is received.
- Pass each of the six sections with a 70% score
- Maintain a 75% score overall for the entire six months of the program

You may cancel your registration up to two weeks before the program start date, and receive a full refund (minus a credit card processing fee). After that date, no refunds will be given. Participants may transfer to a future program (within one year of your original program) based on availability, with no penalty.
